July 19, 2012 Regular Meeting Agenda Item #3 Item Title C-2 Settlement of Personal Injury Claim of Derek Buben Issue/Rationale On May 10, 2007, Derek Buben was a student at Orange Park High School.  While in shop class he was allowed to use a table saw with the blade safety guard disengaged.  The wood misfed into the saw and caused his right hand to be thrown into the saw blade.  He suffered severe injuries to his right hand which required extensive medical treatment, including surgery.  Medical bills exceeded $71,000.00.  Settlement was reached by concensus between Board Chair Carol Studdard, Dr. George Copeland and Bruce Bickner.  Total settlement for all claims is $58,000.00.
